A Thanksgiving Wish From B & D

"We tend to forget that happiness doesn't come as a result of getting something we dont have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have."

-Frederick Koenig

I am so thankful for all of you...my friends and family. I hope that everyone has a cozy and yummy Thanksgiving filled with love and laughter. I love this time of year!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Bachelor's Degree: $$$ Master's Degree: $$$$$. An Education: Priceless.

"Don't let schooling interfere with your education."

-Mark Twain

Oh...this is so true. Lately I've really come to realize that school is so much more a rite of passage than anything else. Especially graduate school. They increase the tuition? For what? It's the same professors and the same building. It's so lame. Don't get me wrong, I've learned an INCREDIBLE amount while in school, but so many people depend on a "college" education to learn rather than viewing their entire life as a chance to be educated about everything. I've been a little melancholic thinking about school being over. I feel like the Architecture building and all of the students are a second home. I'll miss it, but it's always nice to know that the learning never stops :)

This photo is a flashback to my trip to Germany in 2007...one of the greatest learning experiences of my life!

“We can only appreciate the miracle of a sunrise if we have waited in the darkness”

On Sunday morning, Brittany, Mike, Brandon and I woke up around 3:30am and made a trip out to the Salt Flats to see the sunrise. This might seem like a sort of random trip, but we were inspired by our Visual Communications class which focuses on extraordinary experiences in the natural or built environment. We decided to go out just for fun and it was totally worth it! Wow. What an incredible view. We both took our cameras while Brandon and Mike cuddled under a blanket in the back of the xterra...okay, okay, fine, they didn't cuddle. It was a funny visual though wasn't it? Teehee.

Here's a video of the pictures we took. It's difficult to capture how beautiful and magical it was. For all of you who are photographers, it was so difficult to keep an accurate shutter speed to keep up with the constantly changing light! Grrr. The salt flats already make you feel like you're on the edge of the earth or on a different planet completely, but with the sunrise and the transition from no light to intense light, it is so breathtaking. Everything seemed to move so slowly, but when the sun came out, everything moved so quickly. Brittany and I decided to start something with this whole experience and travel to different places to experience the sunrise and document it with pictures. I can't wait! The video is about ten minutes long and is slow moving. It's really meant to be enjoyed in a relaxed state, so put the kids to bed, get a drink or whatever you need to do, turn up the sound, (pause the playlist music on the right) sit back, relax and enjoy :)

Peace ~ Love ~ Equality

This past Saturday, my friend and I attended the Equality Rally downtown. It was amazing to see a huge turnout in support of equality and civil rights. There were some inspirational speakers and a march around a few city blocks. There were also a couple dozen of anti-gay protestors but most of us just ignored them :) Here we are blocking their death threat sign with our signs...
It was a great experience and I was glad to be a part of it!

My friend Bwandon

Okay, so now I'm going to highlight my friend/husband/partner in crime Brandon...or as I lovingly call him him, Bwandon. When I was searching for pictures for this post, I realized how much I take for granted that we've been best friends for almost ten years! We have so many memories together and we've grown and changed so much over the last ten years. It's amazing how love and friendship can grow stronger with time.

Okay, is it just me or do we look like we're twelve years old in this picture? Oh...wow...

How We met: Well, I remember seeing Brandon in the hallways at Oquirrh Hills, and I always secretly thought he was so cute. He remembers seeing me in middle school in the talent show, singing and dancing like Selena in my flourescent green bell bottoms. Um...so, anyway, we didn't officially meet until 10th grade Biology where I took my chance when I saw him sitting on the back row and went to the back to start up a conversation. I totally thought that he wasn't into me since he was only responding in one word sentences so I almost transferred classes...but then realized that he was just a little shy and that made him even more adorable to me :) He asked me in class one day if I wanted to hang out because he just received his driver's license, and I said yes, and we drove around for like three hours in his mom's car just talking and driving around randomly. The rest is history!

What I Love About Him: Um, this could go on for a long time so I'll try to narrow it down! Brandon is the most unselfish person you will ever meet. He sincerely cares about his family and friends and is always concerned with making sure that those around him are happy. He is honest. He is a hard worker. He is a true gentleman. He does his own laundry :) We take turns cooking and doing dishes...he's a great cook! He's been so supportive while I'm in school. He is open-minded. He loves the outdoors. He taught himself how to play the guitar. When he puts his mind to something, he doesn't give up. He scratches my back EVERY night. We can talk about anything. Nothing is taboo. He has a great sense of humor! We can make each other laugh at the dumbest things. He has a nice body :) He's great with our nieces and nephews. He's daring enough to go skydiving (eek!) His tattoos. His smile. His laugh when he laughs so hard that hardly any sounds comes out..hehehe. His organization. I'm sort of the messy one in the relationship...he keeps things in order! His hugs. His kisses. I love you Brandon!!

Something to get to know him by: Wow, what can I say...you just have to get to know Brandon to know how great he is. One story that comes to mind is when we went canyoneering a few years ago, and Brandon wasn't feeling very well that morning but then said he was feeling better. We decided to go anyway with Tamara and Dave and it was extremely tiring...a few times in the canyon, we would all be holding ourselves 20 feet or so in the air in a narrow crack and if we let go...well, it wouldn't be good. It was a great adventure which was scary at times, but the whole time, I never felt unsafe or worried because I knew that Dave and Brandon wouldn't let anything happen to Tamara and I. There were a few scares in the canyon but the boys were there every step of the way making sure that we were safe. It took a lot longer than we expected to hike out of the canyon and back to the car, and by the time we made it there, it was dark and we were all SO EXHAUSTED. It wasn't until the end of the hike that Brandon told me that he had the flu and hadn't felt well the entire hike. He had a fever and everything...poor Brandon. He didn't want anyone to worry so he kept it to himself the whole time and pushed through the tiring descent. We were all so sore and tired. (well, except Dave, he has like abnormal adrenaline or something.) I don't think I could walk normal for about a week afterwards! We started driving home and we were all making up our minds to call into work the next day because we just didn't have the energy to go home the next day. We were all fine with telling a little white lie to get out of the next day's work, but Brandon refused to and decided to make the trek home to fulfill his responsibilities at work. I don't know if I ever told him, but I was so impressed that day. He showed his true character and proved that he is truly an ethical person who always puts those around him first and always wants to do the right thing.

Our favorite things to do: We love anything outdoors. We love to go fishing, hiking, camping, four wheeling, etc. This past summer we went hiking probably every weekend and it was so much fun! There's nothing like a challenging and tiring hike and then being rewarded at the end with the fantastic views of the beautiful Utah Mounains. We love to travel. We enjoy cooking a gourmet meal together and enjoying it with a good bottle of wine. We love to hang out at home in our pajamas watching a movie when it's cold outside. We enjoy taking Chica out to the dog park or on walks. Um...there are other things that we enjoy but I won't go into that...heehee!

I'm so lucky to have you and I think that too often I take for granted our great relationship. It's sort of scary sometimes how well we get along, isn't it? Of course, we have our little arguments, but it's usually about something like replacing the toilet paper roll or something :) I am so happy with you. I am so happy with life. Thank you for everything Brandon, I love you!

Cheers to our many memories together and to many more to come :)

"It's a question of love..."

I wish that I didn't get so caught up in politics sometimes, but the issue of gay marriage is so much more than just politics. First of all, this is not even an issue that should be voted on, but because it has come to this, everyone must ask theirselves what the right choice is. We should all ask ourselves, what would you do if the majority voted that YOU couldn't get married? I'm so hopeful and excited to see where the future takes us with a true leader in the white house now and I can only hope that my future children are born into a world where everyone is considered equal.

To quote The Beatles, "All you need is love!"

Think about this one...

San Francisco Sunset/Japan Sunrise (or something like that)

“The grand show is eternal. It is always sunrise somewhere; the dew is never dried all at once; a shower is forever falling; vapor is ever rising. Eternal sunrise, eternal dawn ...each in its turn, as the round earth rolls.”

-John Muir

My friend Angela

The next friend highlight is Angela....

How We Met: Angela and I met probably in the womb...we grew up in the same neighborhood and were best friends for as long as I can think back! We only lived a few houses away from each other so we were always playing. We used to play night games with the neighborhood and play in each other's backyards....ahhh..the memories. We would jump on the tramp, swing, ride big wheels, etc. We actually went all the way from preschool through high school together!

What I Love About Her: Once again, we can totally be ourselves around each other...this is what really makes a true friendship don't you think? When I think back to all of our memories, it's almost difficult to pinpoint one...I remember laughing. A lot. There was a lot of laughing. In class. When we're not supposed to.

I love how close we were growing up. We were so close that I swear our minds were on some kind of third dimension where we are partly psychic but only with each other...like we would show up to school ALL THE TIME wearing the same outfit. It was so weird. Also, I had a dream that she was pregnant before I even heard about it! Weird. We went camping once with her family and her mom said that in the middle of the night, we were fighting over a nintendo game in our sleep...so we were like sleep dreaming/talking together. Hmm....I wonder if she's reading my mind right now...are you Angela? Heehaw.

Something to get to know her by: Well, there are endless stories that I could tell. I'll tell one of my favorite stories.
Angela and I are probably about 16 and she's driving us to Hollywood Video in Riverton. We pull into the parking lot of Petersons and are slowly driving towards the parking lot when I sort of glance up above my head and out of the corner of my eye I see a really dark thing on the ceiling of the car. Immediately, my mind thinks "spider...about to fall on my head...get out..." and without thinking I start screaming about a spider about to fall on my head and I leap out of my seat and lay across Angela's lap (who is still trying to drive). Hearing my screams and something about a spider, Angela also starts to scream as we drive into the Hollywood Video parking lot. As we are both trying to get as far as possible from the spider on the ceiling on my side, we are both smashed up against the driver's side window...Angela's face was completely against the glass screaming and I'm pretty much on her lap trying to unbuckle my seatbelt. She finally pulls into the handicapped parking stalls at an angle where she puts the car in park and opens up her door...she has one of those cars that have an automatic seatbelt so as we both try to pile out of open door, the seatbelt slides forward and as we fall out (still screaming hysterically) we become completely entangled in each other and in the seatbelt. A lady walks by and is very concerned when she asks us if we're okay. As we finally begin to compose ourselves as we are laying on the asphalt by the car that is now taking up two handicapped spots, I look inside the car and discover that the "spider" is just a stain on the ceiling. We laughed even longer now that we knew we were screaming about nothing and people just passed by us wondering what on earth we were doing laying in the parking lot laughing.

Let me just say, I think that is one of the best laughs of my life!

Now Angela lives in New Mexico so we don't see each other that often, but she is a great friend and person! She has the two most adorable boys ever!

I miss you Angela!

I'm so happy for three reasons...

Number One: Yesterday I registered for MY LAST SEMESTER OF SCHOOL EVER. Ahhhhh.

Number Two: I had a $50 gift card to DSW so I went shopping yesterday for some new shoes. I saw some totally cute boots that I really wanted but they're the kind that you wear over jeans...do you know what I mean? I walked away from the boots thinking, "I'm not really a 'boot over jean' kind of person'". Then I thought, "Why not? I WILL be a 'boot over jean' person if I want to be!" So I bought them and I love them!

Number Three: Today we're leaving to one of my favorite places in the world...Marysvale, Utah, where we will spend the weekend with mom and dad and friends. I'm ready to soak my worries away in the hot tub under the stars. :)

Heeheehaw.

“I bet a fun thing would be to go way back in time to where there was going to be an eclipse and tell the cave men, "If I have come to destroy you, may the sun be blotted out from the sky." Just then the eclipse would start, and they'd probably try to kill you or something, but then you could explain about the rotation of the moon and all, and everyone would get a good laugh.”

My friend Mike.

How we Met: Mike and I met during our first year of Architecture school but didn't really become good friends until last year when we went to New Orleans for one of our studios. Now we are like BFF along with Brittany and Dallas...who I will highlight in a future post. We both won the New Orleans competition and travelled back to N.O. a second time which was a blast...I would've been totally bored out of my mind if we didn't have each other on that trip!

What I Love About Him: He is not afraid to be himself and we can definitely be ourselves around each other. He is like a walking dictionary. Seriously. At least once a day I have to ask him..."um....so what exactly do you mean when you say ____". Here are two examples of words he might use in a everyday conversation...

Acidulous: Of bitter temperment.

Catachristic: A mis-use of phrase or mis-nomer.

Yes, I just asked him to give me some of his favorite "big" words and he spewed these upon me.

He's so intelligent and knows some of the most random facts. Like, did you know that the whale on Pinnochio is "Monstro"? I didn't. He did and acted completely disgusted that I wouldn't know this. Um, hello? Whateva Mikey.

I also love his constant gesturing while he speaks. Especially the occasional hip swing that he throws into his presentations.

Something to get to know him by:

On our trip to Germany we visited an awesome project by Tadao Ando. Sometimes Mike finds himself inexplicably drawn to architecture and can't help but become physical with it.

Snort.

Wheezle.

My friend Brittany.

Germany 2007

New York 2006

Okay, so I'm going to start a new thing and make a post about each and every one of my friends. This should be fun. The first friend highlight is Brittany.

How we Met: We met in 8th grade and were great friends then kind of lost touch when she went to private school. We met up again in college when we realized we both chose to go into Architecture! Great minds think alike. Let me tell you, I'm so glad that I have Brittany or I would go crazy. Four years of architecture school without a best friend like her? Now that would have been close to impossible. Everyone at school jokes that we are married but whateva. They wish.

What I Love About Her: She's passionate about life. If she believes something she completely dedicates herself to it but always has an open mind willing to change.

Oh my, we can totally be ourselves around each other and have so much fun together. We can talk about things like politics, sex, religion, philosophy and even poop. Yes poop. And farting. It's really fun. We both love to travel and we have the best conversations together about life. I love it.

Something to get to know her by: Here's one little story that kind of sums up Brittany. When we leave our desks at school which have many valuables on them such as drafting tools, art supplies, electronics, etc., I caught her the other day locking up in her drawer two items: Her laptop and her recently purchased bag of cookies. There you go.

She's the best!

Go Obama.

That's all.
